Timeline
The company began as chemical merchants selling a variety of drysaltery items. Extended oxide & pigments were later produced for the local paint companies.
Started to supply natural oxides to the precast concrete industry. Also sold various extenders into the paint industry such as barytes, blanc fixe & calcium carbonate.
During the Second World War, camouflage pigments were manufactured for the government.
Supplying major concrete precast manufacturers such as Forticrete of Liverpool. Later in the 1960's Marshalls of Halifax became one of the largest customers taking as estimated 400 tons of Proctorial Cement Colour.
The first sales overseas were to Libya & Syria and over the next 15 years, new customers were found in places like Central & South America, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Philippines and even in smaller markets like Mauritius.
Due to expansion, the business was moved to a much larger site in North Wales. This is still the current location today.
The company introduced a range of liquid pigments for concrete and in addition manufactured carbon black pigments for Harrisons & Crosfield, which later became Elementis Pigments.
This later became ISO9001, which our quality management system complies to today.
This was the first time the company exhibited at the world's largest construction fair.
The business has changed a lot in 100 years and the construction industry is very much the focus now.
The turn of the millennium saw Procter Johnson introduce a polymer based pigment for the asphalt industry.
We made our first direct shipment from Shanghai to a customer in South Africa.
Although blending capacity wasn't an issue, it was becoming more apparent that we needed to be able to produce smaller batches of different colours quickly. The 'Mix Aco' helped us achieve that.
The new logo & website was launched.
With capacity up to 10,000 tons, the plant is equipped to cope with any business demands from the UK and Europe.
A new laboratory is built.
Procter Johnson receives the EC Certificate of Factory Production Control.
Procter Johnson is committed to the welfare of everybody connected with the business and is proud that our management systems meet these standards.

Yelhy Technology Africa – 10 Years & Counting
Procter Johnson celebrates a 10 year partnership with Yelhy Technology Africa this month. Yelhy Technology is much more than a construction company & manufacturer of quality concrete products. Through the vision of founder & CEO, Dr Biyen Beli, they run a project to tackle youth unemployment in Western & Central Africa. To date more than 50,000 young people have been trained in HIMO Technic, meaning High Intensity Hand Work.
The program is an example of a jobs strategy that is nothing new in Africa but is deployed less than one might expect. Essentially, it means employing many people to build something that could just as easily be made by very few.
It sounds simple, but it requires a deliberate turn away from the way public works contracting is often done now. Despite the high rates of poverty and youth unemployment in many African cities, projects such as street paving are often the domain of international contractors who mechanize the work using modern construction methods
The original manufacturing facility was started in Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and further manufacturing facilities have opened in Senegal, Congo, Ivory Coast & Mali creating thousands of new jobs at the manufacturing and contracting divisions.
Procter Johnson are proud suppliers of pigments & additives to Yelhy Technology

Krete admixtures to be manufactured in the UK
Procter Johnson has signed a licence & manufacturing agreement with Krete Industries in the United States. The finished products are currently imported from the U.S, so being able to manufacture the Krete admixture range in the United Kingdom will help improve costs, lead times and the carbon footprint. Procter Johnson’s Managing Director, Harvey Jackson, commented ‘This is an excellent fit for the company. Most of our current business is with the semi dry concrete industry and this is exactly the market that Krete specialises in.”
Krete Industries offer high end admixtures for the concrete industry. In addition to the manufacturing and research facilities in Wisconsin, Krete has five stocking warehouses located throughout the U.S.A.
Krete is also a long time member of several industry associations including: the National Concrete Masonry Association, the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, the Architectural Precast Association, the National Precast Concrete Association, the American Concrete Pipe Association, and the Cast Stone Institute.
